When you talk, you are only repeating what you already know. But if you listen, you may learn something new.---The Dalai Lama
In my 25 years in mental health, I have never gotten tired of hearing my client’s stories. I’m repeatedly amazed at how resilient and strong they are. Unfortunately, when they are depressed, they don’t see themselves as strong at all. They feel like they are failing because depression causes them to see only failure. I love to help my clients treat their depression and realize how capable they actually are.
And I have learned so much from them. I have learned that resilience is common, not extraordinary. I’ve learned how our childhood experiences can shape who we are, but also that we can grow and change ourselves as adults. I’ve learned how powerful our minds are. And I’ve learned the healing power of being heard.
