Wrinkles Mean You Laughed

I love this quote! I don’t know who said it, but it makes me feel good. I am older and I have worked to think more positively about myself and, thankfully, the way I feel about myself has changed for the better. Many of my clients are older women and, unfortunately, they struggle with feeling good about themselves. Many have been through menopause or are approaching it, and some are experiencing an empty nest. They are struggling with their self-esteem now that they are not having babies or raising children, are putting on a few pounds, or developing those wrinkles. Our culture often teaches us that only women who are young and beautiful (and fertile) are worthwhile. But not every culture is like this. Many modern and ancient cultures, including Native American cultures, revered the wisdom and experience of older people as accomplished and valued members of their culture. I would like to see our modern culture get back to these values. When working with clients, I like to encourage them to think differently about themselves--rather than over the hill, more like top of the mountain. They feel so much better! And an additional benefit--often when we value ourselves, others start valuing us more.
