Most of us are familiar with signs of depression—depressed feeling, not sleeping well (or sleeping too much), not having energy, etc. But there are several symptoms that are associated with depression that might be a little surprising.
1. Excessive anger-depression causes us to think negatively about most things and this can lead to anger at other people or situations.
2. Guilt-this one might not be too surprising, but depression is often accompanied by feeling guilty about EVERYTHING. This is a result of that negative thinking that depression causes, this time directed at ourselves.
3. Relationship conflict-this is another result of that pesky negative thinking caused by depression. We may be thinking a lot about any negative traits in our partner and have difficulty remembering the good things.
4. Physical illness-depression is often associated with physical illness but sometimes it’s difficult to determine which came first. It’s easy to see how someone might become depressed due to battling an illness or disability. Also, the lack of energy and negative feelings about ourselves that are a result of depression can lead us to neglect our physical health, or even make it worse by using alcohol, drugs, or food to cope.
5. Anxiety-I very often see anxiety in my depressed clients. Again, it may be difficult to determine which came first. Anxiety and depression make each other worse—we feel depressed which can lead to anxiety about why we’re depressed or worry about whether we’ll ever get better, which then leads to more depression.
